Blackburn hospital undergoes £3m expansion

Beardwood Hospital is getting two new theatres, three physio treatment pods and a revamped waiting area.

The 3,000 sq ft project for the private hospital is a bit of a mixed bag – part expansion and part refurbishment.

Beardwood has reworked some of its existing clinical space, transforming it into a multi-purpose day case theatre. It is also in the process of having a modular theatre built to enable the hospital to see 9,000 patients a year.

While the multi-purpose theatre is already open – patients were welcomed on 16 August – the modular theatre is not due to be complete until December.

IKON is the architect of the expansion, with JRB Environmental as M&E consultant. BSP is the structural engineer. Other consultants include Quadrant on building control, Walker Cotter as principal designer, and ModculeCo on modular theatre. Contractors are DD Porter for the new theatre and One Facility for the physio pods.

Beardwood Hospital is located on Preston New Road in Blackburn. It is part of BMI Healthcare, which was acquired by Circle Health Group in January 2020. Circle Health Group is in the midst of investing £100m in upgrading its UK facilities.
